The best imagery for depression that I've found is actually in
Haruki Murakami's
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, wherein he describes an abandoned well that his protagonist sits in for a length of time. Deep holes in the ground are recurring themes in Murakami's books, for whatever reason. Also cats.
