46. No Guns

We've become so desensitized to gun violence in this country that in some ways the news of another mass shooting somewhere is just...normal. It's profoundly disturbing on so many levels.

The added indignity to this particular bit of insanity is the connection it has to the Dark Knight Rises film and CNN at least, if not other news outfits, using terms on their crawl like “Batman shooter.” Here's the thing about Batman: in his fictional universe, he exists because of gun crime. A firearm homicide is his reason for being. There would be no bigger advocate for getting guns out of the hands of civilians than Batman. Even though the CNN crawl and other such labels are only using a kind of shorthand, the association of Batman with a homicidal walking NRA brochure is, well, unfortunate at best.
